Tame Impala - Nothing That Has Happened So Far Has Been Anything We Could Control

Lonerism is one of my favorite albums I have ever heard in my life. I don't even know where to begin when trying to describe it. Each song is perfect in my eyes. Never have I identified with music as much as I do with this album. This is my personal favorite. It's the peak of the whole album. It's fucking incredible, the most cosmic thing. I really don't know how he'll top this album and this song. I said that about the first album though so I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Chris Cohen - Caller No.99

Chris Cohen keeps it mellow and extra groovy. Kind of like Vetiver, but much more nostalgic-ey Laurel Canyon vibe. Get the whole album, its perfect for mind drifting on a sunny morning ( physically or just the mindset). Dig.

White Fence - A Pearl is Not a Diamond

A quick post of a song (and album and artist!) that I really dig. This is my favorite off this album. Yar.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)

I came across this yesterday and I was pretty pumped because I had no idea UMO came out with a new ep. Here are the two songs off it. Sorry, no linky.

Vintage Joint: Damin Eih A.L.K. & Brother Clark

If you've taken too much acid and have found this blog, then boy are you lucky. Super rare, obscure, early 70's psych-folk. When you come down, search for this album. You won't be disappointed. Maybe if I get ambitious I'll try and find a link and make it easy on you.

The Allah-Las

Came across The Allah-Las' album and I liked the album art so I gave this first track a listen. Before the 1:00 mark I heard 60's revival inspired garage/surf guitars (not the cheesy "let's all take our best gal down to the beach and boogie" shit) and the lyrics "out on the water, is where you're gonna find me", and I was all like "yup, this is for me,". Super cool, a touch of psych as well. Maybe I'm just hearing things, I don't know. Get to boogie-ing

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Ramble Tamble

Usually when someone says they don't like my music, I'm very indifferent about it. That's cool, you like what you like, I like what I like. In this case though, if this song doesn't get your blood pumping, give you goosebumps etc., then you can go fuck yourself. Honestly, this is my favorite Creedence song, one of my favorite songs from I guess technically the 70's (even though they were mostly a 60's band). Fuck, of all time! I also feel its a bit ignored when looking at the Creedence catalog. The lyrics, the guitar playing, the bass, the drums...man oh man. The planets aligned when they recorded this song. Give your life meaning and listen to this song. You can find the whole album on any major torrent site (it's called Cosmo's Factory). May I suggest kickasstorrents or thepiratebay. They already made their money, so don't feel guilty.

Tomorrow's Tulips

Al Knost and friends play in a band. Not sure where you can get the record.  This is my favorite and its at the end of his movie "Polyester". Enjoy and search well.

Full Leary interview in Surfer

The Surfer interview with Leary in 1978. Pretty much hits the nail on the head in regards to what surfing is all about. I really would like to read the Art of Small-Wave surfing.

More Leary

http://lee-robertson.co.uk/archives/839

A neat little excerpt I found while searching some Timothy Leary. As attached to the hippie mainstream as he is and written off by some as being a bit of a drug fueled fool, I like the guy and he has some great ideas. One of the few people to "get" what surfing is without actually being a surfer.

I would greatly enjoy owning this book.
I kind of wish I was part of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.

VIntage Joint: Flutes

Any hippie worth his salty unwashed hair loves flutes. And although I wash my hair daily, I still love flutes. These tracks are two examples of how beautiful this wondrous wind instrument can be.

Melody's Echo Chamber

Dreamy, psychedelic pop. As if she didn't sound trippy enough already, Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) produced the record. Every song is fantastic, so get the whole album. What...

Where have the Docta's Been...?

Why we've been planning how to get into Mordor with Bill Cosby. It's getting heated. Especially since there are no black people in Lord of the Rings. Hmmmmm....

Also some serious music hunting and gathering, which of course leads to music digestion, which leads to posts, which leads to links, which leads to you downloading in YOUR hunt for music, and that makes the big wheel keep on turnin'!

Lord Huron - TIme To Run

Hot damn!!! I just learned about the new Lord Huron record and I am psyched! Judging by this video, which combines two of my loves hippie music and westerns, it's going to be one of my favorite albums. Great video for the song too! An all-time favorite for sure! The album is out October 9th! HOOOORAYYYY!!!

Adult Swim Singles Program

Adult Swim Singles Program

Adultswim, the unofficial late-night stoner channel, released 13 singles over the course of the summer. It was an eclectic mix yet all of it was wonky and handpicked by other people who enjoy a good bong hit. Not all of it was my taste, but I did really enjoy Unknown Mortal Orchestra's track as well as Wye Oak's "Spirals". Gauntlet Hair and Com Truise were great as well. What else impressed me was the artwork. It was incredible. Such a fantastic idea/theme. Very heady. It is definitely inspiring me and my own work. You can download all 13 tracks in one big file now by going to the link above. Enjoy!

Wye Oak - Spirial

This track is fucking cool. Lots of spacey echos. All the sounds just bounce around in your head off each other. Headphones preferably.

Greatest words ever from pitchfork

"007: Led Zeppelin IV [Atlantic; 1971] We must be lying to ourselves: There is no way this album should not be #1. If my fellow PFM writers could go to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 's memory-erasure clinic and wipe out everything related to this record and band-- the radio overplay, the Spinal Tap jokes, Robert Plant asking, "Does anybody remember laughter?"-- and hear IV again for the first time, it would be at the very top of this list. Because when the riff from "Black Dog" hits you for the first time, you come face to face with God. Nothing is bigger than Led Zeppelin IV. It tears your skin and grinds away your doubt and self-hatred, freeing the rage and lust and anger of cockblocked adolescence. Listening to this album is like fucking the Grand Canyon. Some people call "When the Levee Breaks" the album's true epic, because it sounds like the blues while "Stairway to Heaven" sounds like druids. But that was the fucking point. Zeppelin understood that you spend your days under the weight of shit, so they show you the way out with a moronized stewpot of myth, Tolkien and California daydreaming, a place where you can pray for greatness from battles you'll never fight. Zeppelin spanned it all, because they knew sometimes you wield the Hammer of the Gods and sometimes you just get the shaft. --Chris Dahlen" This is the best thing I've ever read on Pitchfork, a site I usually am not too fond of. The context is their 100 best albums of the 70's. I agree totally with this. I mean, I'm not the biggest Zeppelin fan, but they we're fucking amazing. You just have to listen to records like this with a totally clear mind, like its 1971 and you just picked up the record. Then you'll truly appreciate it. Sometimes you need a little help from a certain thing to get there, but hey who doesn't.

DESTRUCTION OF US

Sven Libaek - In The Wave

I dig Sven. I dig surf soundtracks made especially for surf films, from Morning of the Earth, Endless Summer to Year Zero. Great for some summer longboarding.

pleasure is a deathwish

THE BIBLE IS AN EMPTY TOMB FILLED WITH SAND

Dungen - Det Tar Did

More hippie music. This time its Dungen, from Sweden. A track off their 2008 album titled 4, its one of my favorites. They are an incredible band and a huge influence on a lot of psych music. A very unique sound as well. You're not going to find a band that makes the same sound they do. The side projects "The Amazing" and "Life on Earth!" both of which I adore, are close but all three have a their own flavour. I admit that in a few of their songs, the Swedish vocals sound a bit goofy to me but most of the time there is such a great melody to his voice that it doesn't matter that its in Swedish. I find this is the same for me with Spanish vocals yet I feel that Spanish is a prettier language, especially when it comes to singing. Enjoy! It Takes Time

Vetiver - Soft Glass

There are no words for how much I love Vetiver and this song in particular. Every song on every album makes me relaxed and happy. He expands upon the early to mid 70's folky psychy rock with fantastic results.Bung dinga dung diga dun diga dun

Emeralds - Access Granted

This song, and album, is a fantastic piece of electro-psych. If you think otherwise, I'll just slap you in the face. What did the five fingers say to the face?

Fleetwood Mac/The Amazing

One of my favorite contemporary bands, The Amazing, paid tribute to Danny Kirwan of Fleetwood Mac, one of my favorites from the late 60's/early70's. The took some of the song structure and chords from "Sunny Side of Heaven" and remade it into "The Kirwan Song". Both songs are absolutely spectacular, but you can't really compare the two. Both had different influences, were made at different times, however I think its safe to say both were made under the influence of fun drugs. Bravo. For those of you who didn't know, Fleetwood Mac was cool before Stevie Nicks joined in. Now the only original member is the drummer, Mick Fleetwood so they're only 25% cool. Enough rambling, listen and enjoy.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Shit these guys are good. Real good. On the mountain side

The Amazing

Easily my favorite band only behind Tame Impala. These guys make 60's 70's psych-folk-rock and they do it with originality. Two of the band members are actually in Dungen. This song is off their first full length and I just got my hands on it thanks to an eMusic trial. I couldn't find it anywhere else, so good luck. If I had the money I would own all their albums on vinyl and cd and mp3, that's how AMAZING they are.  (sorry I couldn't resist). Sung in English ,as are all their songs, this track sounds like a Neil Young/David Crosby collaboration when they were really on their game. Christoffer Gunrup's vocals swirl and glide throughout in a dreamy, grass induced haze. Its like he was born to sing this kind of music.

This one comes off of their ep "Wait for a Light to Come". The whole album is great. There's definitely a coastal feel to every song. Another tough one to find. More ear caressing vocals, glistening guitar chords, and shimming percussion, very uplifting. Makes me feel like riding a wave in slo-mo. This song, my god. Just listen to it. The album "Gentle Stream" is fantastic. Flashlight and International Hair are my other two standout tracks. You're most likely to find this one with some persistent searching. Buy them if you can afford it though.

Born Into Magic

i am the womb of every holt,
i am the blaze on every hill,
i am the queen of every hive,
i am the shield for every head,
i am the tomb of every hope..
who, but I, gives birth to all that was, is and shall be?

This song is a huge inspiration for me lately. Good for deep thought.

Finished this today. Now on to fish joint.

Le Blorr

These things I'll be

I absolutely adore the Beach Boys. They are just wonderful. There's nothing like vocal harmony perfection. This song is probably my favourite song from them. I feel like the early 70's catalogue doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Rocksucker blog said it best when describing this song. Here's a quote from their blog about the song.
"'Till I Die" is on the very top rung of Brian songs, an awe-inspiring snapshot of still life on Earth, frozen in time ("I'm a rock in a landslide / Rolling over the mountainside / How deep is the valley?) - in fact, how this song is not more broadly known is a damning indictment on our planet. This is the kind of song around which everything melts away while it's playing, the kind of song that takes all of the beauty, pain, mystery and love in the world and bottles it all up as an offering to a higher plain on behalf of all humankind, a blown-minded response to the crazy world around us and very conceivably the music you might feel inside yourself if you were isolated on an island, looking out to sea as the sky turns orange and leaves dance past you in a caressing breeze...

There's food and shelter and water...

Ya dig?

how the past looks at you

Get with the fucking program man and listen to White Fence. He's got a bit of a Lennon-esque voice, which is always good. Plus its super psychedelic. Might be a little tougher finding the album, but I have faith in you. -M

You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

I don't even know what to say about this movie. Its one of my absolute favorites (thanks Dad). It just might be the best western ever made. If you've never seen it, my god...what have you been doing? The soundtrack is just as epic as the film. This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. -M

The Aliens. Woah ho ho ho! I can't believe its taken me this long to listen to them. So so good. This particular track sounds like the Moody Blues at their best. Very psychedelic album, the whole record is great. I want more! I found it on the pirate bay torrent search engine. -M

Ruler of the Night

Something a little different from me. Dark, dreamy and a slightly evil. -M

Children of the Moon

Surprisingly, I'm not a real big Flaming Lips fan. They're a great band, just doesn't really click. However!, when they did a track with Tame Impala I had to hear it and I loved it. The best part is it sounds like equal parts of both musicians and they blend perfectly. It would be super cool if they did a whole album together, The Flaming Lips have already done it once I believe, remaking Dark Side of the Moon. -M

HEAPS OF LEMONS

A BALLOON CALLED MOANING

Keith Canisius

Keith Canisius is incredible. He's up there on my favorites list with the like of Tame Impala, White Denim, Crystals Stilts (to name a few). Dripping in lysergia (one song of his is even called "LSD"), he makes electronic dream pop music that is just so unique. I haven't heard anything else like him. Its so damn good. For me this is excellent sounds before a surf session, especially the unexpected 3-4 foot ultra clean easy waves I scored Friday morning (while at work hehehe). He has a bandcamp page here. Oh and the best part, his music is free! What a great dude. I have yet to check out his band The Holy Dreamers, but I can imagine that they're great too. Here a fav from each album above.

Crystal Stilts - Radiant Door Ep

These fucking guys man...these fucking guys. Between the echo, reverb, spookyish synths, and vocals that sound like they were recorded in an old cavern, surfy guitars, psychedelicness, man oh man, these fucking guys. Listen and dig. Oh and if you've got the loot to spare, buy the record. -m

intense bottom turn!

White Denim - Last Day of Summer

When a band like white denim decides to experiment with their sound, you know good things are in store. They are definitely one of my favorite bands. I don't understand the punk back round some people say they have, maybe its because their music isn't aggressive, it weaves and glides with some energy and speed, but always optimistic. Its an alternative rock ( a very vague and open category) base, with psych, folk, jazz and experimental all mixed into one fantastic record. Listen and dig. -M

Magic Wands - Aloha Mooooooooon

I listened to this song about 20 times today (going on 21). I just love it. It may be one of my favorite songs ever. It brings images of a bright moonlit beach, and tumbling in the surf with a lover as well as sliding in glassy afternoon waves. Its just so mellow and light. The vocals just float and drift past vibrating synths and tropic guitar melodies, all the while the sounds of crashing surf and seagulls line the backround. A mediafire search should do the trick.

Life on Earth!

The Life on Earth! - The Perfect Spot

A side project for the members of Dungen (sans the singer), the Life on Earth! make peaceful, happy hippie music that sounds straight out of 1970, but without all the doom and gloom that the post 60's era brought. It makes you feel happy with life and is a great accompaniment to the summer season. Oh, and the vocals are in English! I actually don't really dig the vocals in Dungen which is a shame because the music is outstanding. I wish I had a download link for you, but you'll have to purchase this one. I stumbled across this one for free at some blog that I cannot recall. All I remember is that it went with an interview that blog did with Mattias Gustavsson and he himself wanted to give it away.
