Quilt - Arctic Shark
Hooray, Quilt is releasing a new record! A bit more polished sound and still as enjoyable as their first record. Get down on it!
Doug Tuttle - Turn This Love
No more MMOSS. Damn. Fortunately, this fella here decided to continue his musical desires and release a solo album. It comes out on January 28th. Enjoy and support if you can afford to!

Ducktails - Honey Tiger Eyes
I just heard the new Ducktails EP in full. About 11 times today. Words cannot express how much I enjoy his music. Five A+ tracks. The album was recorded by Matt Mondanile all by himself. It sounds like he had a creative summer while conjuring a not so mysterious fog bank around his home in Ridgewood, NJ.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Evil Man
A concept album that a group of Aussies made. It sounds like a bad-ass soundtrack to a western movie from the 70's. Real fucking good stuff. Get the album. And check out their second album of the year coming out on the 27th.

Chick Corea - Crystal Silence
Classic track from early Return to Forever/early 70's Corea. This song invokes the exact mental image that is on the cover of the album.

The Everywheres - Slow Friends
I have really been enjoying this one a lot lately. Every track is solid. Keeping it at a mid to low pace, each song carries you gently through the warm sunshine emanating from your speakers. Great psych-pop music. Name your price over at Bandcamp. Help them out if you can afford to.

Washed Out - It All Feels Right/ All I Know
Washed Out knocked it out of the park on this one. Holy shit.

Moodiod - Je suis la Montagne
This might be one of the weirdest videos I have ever seen, I say that with the utmost admiration for it. Real fucking cool. The guitarist from Melody's Echo Chamber created this band and I cannot wait for their EP out in September.

AM & Shawn Lee - Steppin' Out
Groovy cover of Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out. I really dig what these two fellas are laying down.
Tuesday, July 30, 2013
Rangers - Luncheon Ghana
From the same school of lo-fi psych as Ducktails (they even did a split album together).

Ducktails - Under Cover video
A bunch of weirdos hanging out in an abandoned house playing dominoes, badminton, and musical instruments all to the tune of a really fucking great song. You go Matt Mondanile. You go.

Funkadelic - Can You Get To That
Time for another installment of "Vintage Joint"! Everyone can use some Funkadelic in their life!
Fleet Foxes - False Knight on the Road
One of my favorite Fleet Foxes songs. I believe that it is actually a traditional folk song. Mr. Pecknold carries out the song and subject matter beautifully. The imagery that I get when listening is that of a battle-hardened, veteran knight watching a young boy shipping out to fight and it makes him not only nostalgic, but perhaps regretting and questioning all that he has done. Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass.

Sagor & Swing
"..its great to have the team back together as there's been a
lack of Middle Earth meets Zelda instrumental albums of late and as suchBotvid
Grenlunds Park arrives just in the knick of time. Knocking the Zelda appeal up
one notch higher with their 8-bit level selection artwork, the music contained
inside leaves no disappointments; quickly becoming the soundtrack to whatever
epic journey you care to break it out for. The pair are still chasing the down
the Shire-pointed rabbit hole towards their hero Bo Hansson's epic 70's
sojourns and they come pretty damn close in scope and execution. This one
should be filed snugly on the shelf between your copies of King Crimson and
Yes, Roger Dean blacklight poster optional but highly recommended." -Raven Sings The Blues
They said it best so there ya go. My only complaint is that it is too short. This album is the balls. Find it and have yourself a groovy time. ;)

Psychic Ills - One More Time
The guitar is 1969 all the way. In fact, everything about this song and video is 1969.

Clinic - Misty
These guys come from the darker side of psychedelia that includes The Doors, Velvet Underground, The Black Angels...off the album "Free Reign".

Devendra Banhart - Mala
I must say, I really enjoyed Devendra Banhart's first 3 proper albums. Cripple Crow and Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon were okay, they had some good songs on each. Overall though, the albums were just okay. What Will Be is a favorite of mine, with the exception of a couple songs on the album. Mala however is quite exceptional. He's scaled back his sound a bit and mellowed. His lyrics are still wonderfully strange. It sounds like he stepped back to Rejoicing in the Hands and Nino Rojo but with the talent and skill he's acquired over a longer musical career. Not something an artist does too often. I love this record!

Vintage Joint: Pink Floyd - Zabriskie Point
Vintage Joint
Another installment of vintage joint. I've been on a Pink Floyd kick lately. Specifically pre-Dark Side of the Moon. Pretty sure Meddle is my favorite official album. This is really awesome too though. It was a collection of songs for a soundtrack to some wonky hippie film that I have been meaning to see. For some dumbass reason the filmmaker scrapped the idea. I think it is Pink Floyd's mellowest cosmic compositions ever penned. Jerry Garcia also recorded some songs for the movie as well, which are also fantastic. Apparently, he sat in a room alone and played the guitar to while watching the 11 minute sex scene that takes place in the desert over and over again (presumably after smoking some fantastic grass).

Vintage Joint: Gabor Szabo - Witchcraft
Vintage Joint
I have never been a big fan of traditional Jazz such as hard bop and the like. I like more experimental Miles Davis-esque jazz. Or Jazz such as this. Mellow jazz with a groove. Good jazz guitar by Gabor Szabo. A legend. Dig it.
Boogarins
This band is fucking great. They're from Brazil and they bring their own unique cultural flavor to psychedelic pop music. It's a similar concept that other bands have success with (Dungen). I cannot wait for a full LP! Free download too by the way. Thank you to the musicians for making such amazing music.

Ducktails - Ivy Covered House/Undercover
Two tracks off of his new album, "Flower Lane", which was hard to determine after choosing my number one " Ivy Covered House". I love that song. I think I listened to it 20 times today and it has not gotten old. I think it is one of my favorite songs EVER. The entire album is absolutely amazing. The whole things sounds a bit less lo-fi than his earlier recordings. Still sounds like Ducktails though, psychedelic surf guitar, dreamy beach synths.

The Holydrug Couple
Oh my god, this dude is amazing. I'd like to meet him and shake it hand. I'm still too blown away to even describe this one. Definitely one of the best psychedelic albums I have ever heard and I have heard quite a few. Follow your way sounds like he was listening to a lot of Tame Impala when he wrote it. Just holy shit dude.
Note: Both Follakzoid and The Holydrug Couple are from Chile. Perhaps I should visit there one day.
White Fence - Live On Genevive
My favorite track from White Fence's new album. Tim Presley is the tits.
Follakzoid
Music for swimming through nebulae. It can be hard to balance the heavy acid baked grooves with the cosmic spaced bliss mellowness, but they did it.

Date Palms - Yuba Reprise
Wandering through the desert while under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs? This is the music for you!
Dark Bells - Wildflower
3 things I dig: psych, shoegaze/dream pop, and Australia. Welcome to those 3 things together. Ooooooooohhhhhh yyyyyeeeeeeaaaaaaaa...

Crow44
If You're Feeling Down Pt.1 sounds like a lost Moody Blues song. Melancholy, yet hopeful and beautiful.
Woodsman
Woodsman sounds like the pieces of each instrument that creates the noise is made of LSD. That good.

White Fence - To The Boy I Jumped In The Hemlock Alley
"...a psych rock slow jam that really makes you understand why at some point, “groovy” was the adulatory phrase of choice when crunchy, blissed out riffs were on the come up." -Claire Lobenfeld, Stereogum
What she said. I am so fucking psyched for this album.

Sleep Over - I Want To Be Alone
When the spirit goddess of dream pop blankets the earth with her mystical locks, and caresses the sky with her graceful touch, this is the sound that is heard during that wondrous occasion.
Headphones make it even better!

Vintage Joint: David Crosby
I love David Crosby's music. Big time. I loved him in the Byrds, in CSN, CSNY, etc. Vocal harmonies and trippyness are his talents. His 1971 solo album is nothing short of amazing. One of my favorite albums of all time.
if i could only remember my name

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - The Opposite of Afternoon
...because it's awesome. I think I found some new pre-surf songs in this album.

Dumbo Gets Mad - Quantum Leap
Italian groove psych pop. Yes, it's amazing. Buy it if'n ye can, if'n ye can't well what you do is yer own business matey.
I don't know why they chose to only allow one track to be listened to, but they chose a great one.
The track that really hooked me was Crystal Balls On Roll (South Africa). Oooohhhh that flute...

Tame Impala - Mind Mischief (Ducktails Remix)
So dig this shit. Ducktails, aka Matthew Mondanile of Real Estate, both ass-smackingly good music decided to make a remix of Tame Impala's tit-shakingly good "Mind Mischief". It's the best remix of any of their songs and one of the best remixes I have ever plugged headphones into. Both artists' styles are perfectly melded. It sounds less like a remix and more like a collaboration. In fact, I would love to hear collaborative ep between of Kevin Parker and Matthew Mondanile.
Bibio - A tout a l'heure
Bibio continues to make some of the happiest music I have ever heard. This song is a sunshine daydream.
Thursday, March 7, 2013
Vintage Joint: Tim Blake - Midnight
Spacey-synthesizer tunes at their finest. It reminds me of the keyboard/synth parts in Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and "Welcome To The Machine". Really amazing stuff.
Wednesday, March 6, 2013
Echo Lake - In Dreams
I don't know what it is about Britain, but those people sure know how to make dream pop. Kind of like the Swedes and their mystic psych music abilities.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - From The Sun/ No Need For A Leader
Just like Lonerism, Unknown Mortal Orchestra's second album blew me away. Just like Tame Impala's first album, I wondered how UMO would top their first album. Well, this is how. The entire album is fucking perfect. I love it. The styles of music are blended, warped, and zonkified. Amazing. If you have a good pair of headphones, you're in for a cosmic experience. It's around, so do the usual Google search.
Vintage Joint: Chad and Jeremy
Here's a couple selections from Chad & Jeremy's 1968 album "The Ark". Give it a Google search if you like it. It's their best album in my opinion.

The Ladybug Transistor - Six Times
Mesmerizing, daydreaming, baroque pop that Brian Wilson would be proud of. I mean, just look at that cover art! I got this album around 10 years ago and I still love it so much.

Keep an eye out...
Youth Lagoon - Wondrous Bughouse
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - II
YES!!! Feb. 5th for UMO and March 5th for Youth Lagoon! Fuck YEA!!!
Let me add that these are two of the coolest album covers I've seen. Youth Lagoon's looks like something I wish I thought up. God there is so much great music out there. You just have to look.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Endless Shore (Melody's Echo Chamber Cover)
Check this out. Unknown Mortal Orchestra covers Melody's Echo Chamber's song "Endless Shore". The original is my favorite off her album. I love when bands I love cover music from other musicians I love especially the song I love most, love it, love it, love it. Full of love!

Death and Vanilla
I think I stumbled upon one of my new favorite groups. I'm speechless. I mean wow. Love it. Love it. Love it. Wish I could own the vinyl. It's music like this that makes me happy to be living in the time that I am. I'm going to let this one speak for itself! Enjoy!

Belles Will Ring - Crystal Theatre
Woah, how has this record slipped past my clutches for over a year!? If ya dig the Laurel Canyon vibe, then this is for you. If you like Crosby, Stills, Nash AND Young, you're in the right place. It has those late 60's influences with the organs/keys, guitars and bass much like that off all the best artists of the 70's, from Neil, to David Gilmour to Danny Kirwan and Peter Green. Great stuff. The best part is they still make it their own sound. Awesome stuff.

Temple - A Film By Jack Coleman
The only film that supersedes this one is "Tracking". I like what Deus is doing. A LOT. The dudes in this film and we are kindred spirits. The only thing is this film is available here in the States, where as Tracking is only available in Australia and to ship it here costs 22.00 or I could overnight it for 78 dollars! Alas, for now I will have to put off purchasing Tracking until a later date. I might get this soon though.
Here's Tracking's trailer
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Kinski Assassin
This is fucking weird. Real fucking weird. And hilarious.

Treehouse
Trippy, drippy, 8-bit partly, drone, electro-tunes. I never used to be a fan of such music (drone/ambient), but I find that it invokes thought. For me, it acts like a tour guide to introspection. It's there, it provides a background and a general idea if you will for long contemplation. Not that you don't pay attention to the music and its intricacies, for it does not act like background music for some coffee lounge or anything like that. I now value it equally with music that has a more traditional structure.
My favorite track is number 7, panspermia holizon.
Saturday, January 19, 2013
Vintage Joint: Philamore Lincoln
A psych-folk release from 1970 (a fine year for such music). Amazing stuff. Yet another criminally over-looked record.

Maston - Young Hearts
Check this cool tune out. Allmusic says "Influenced by Van Dyke Parks, the Beach Boys, Ennio Morricone and Burt Bacharach, but with a spooky late-60s Psych undercurrent and plenty of Nilsson-esque songcraft"
Sunday, January 6, 2013
Sleeping Loops - Summer Loops
A dude from Long Island, NY who I presume loves both the beach and Real Estate's first album A LOT made this super awesome record. It's mellow, hazy, relaxed, calm, laid back, slightly sleepy stoner-ish beach mellowness. He has 3 records on Bandcamp and they are all free! What a nice dude. Keep'em comin'.
Tame Impala - Endors Toi/Mind Mischeif
Yea more Tame Impala because it's my blog and I fucking said so.
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way/It's About That Time
This is my favorite Miles tune that I've ever heard. So is the other track on this album, "Shhhh...Peaceful". Both clock in around the 20 minute mark. If this is your first foray into jazz then I wouldn't recommend this song, try Davis' "Kind of Blue", Dave Brubeck's 1961 album, or Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments". HOWEVER!, if you stumble across The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions (on certain websites that offer files for less one cent, wink wink) which spans 3 or 4 albums and has varied song lengths for those who find long songs difficult, get it! Enough rambling.

The Dolly Rocker Movement - The Ecstacy Once Told
Awhile back I posted the perfect song by Ennio Morricone "The Ecstacy of Gold". This is The Dolly Rocker Movement's take on that song. Its in the same vein as The Amazing's take on "The Sunny Side of Heaven" written by Danny Kirwan for Fleetwood Mac, named "The Kirwan Song". Good stuff. From the album "Our Days Mind The Tyme"
Clive Tanaka y su Orquesta
Danceable, tropical, dream pop synth tunes. Off the album "Jet Set Siempre No. 1"
